Description

A sedum roof is the rare upgrade that pays back in several currencies at once: it insulates, it slows storm water off the roof, it protects the waterproofing beneath from UV and temperature swing, and it turns the view from an upstairs window into something worth looking at. This is the complete system, not just the plants — protection fleece, drainage and water-reservoir layer, growing medium and a mature sedum blanket carrying four to six varieties, supplied to cover your roof area.

  • Complete build-up: protection fleece, drainage/water reservoir layer, growing medium and mature sedum blanket
  • Blanket arrives already established with 4–6 sedum varieties, not seeded or plugged
  • Four roof sizes covering a shed through to a large extension
  • Laid over your existing waterproofing — pairs naturally with an EPDM rubber roof

Frequently asked questions

Will my roof take the weight? This is the question to settle first. Saturated, the system weighs 85–100kg per m² — a real structural load that a shed or garden room roof may not have been designed for. Have the structure checked by a competent person before ordering; on new builds, design the deck for the green roof from the outset.

What goes underneath it? Sound, continuous waterproofing. A sedum system is not a waterproofing layer — it sits on top of one. An EPDM rubber membrane is a common and durable choice beneath a green roof, and the sedum actually extends the membrane's life by shielding it from UV.

How is it laid? Fleece down first, then the drainage/water reservoir layer with the white fleece facing up, then rake out 2–3cm of the growing medium, then roll the sedum blanket out over the top and water it in.

Does it need edging? Yes — the system needs restraint at the perimeter to hold the build-up in place and leave a clear drainage margin. Aluminium edge trim is the usual solution and is ordered separately to suit your roof's perimeter length.

How much maintenance? Low, not none. Expect to water it through establishment and in prolonged dry spells, feed it roughly annually, and keep outlets and drainage margins clear of debris.

What pitch does it suit? Flat and very low-pitch roofs. Steeper pitches need additional restraint measures beyond the scope of this system.

Building the roof from scratch? Waterproof it first with our 1.2mm EPDM rubber membrane bonded down with EPDM contact bonding adhesive, and keep the outlets clear with an aluminium roof drain outlet.
