Description

Natural slate gives a pitched roof the traditional look at a traditional price, but not every re-roof or new-build budget stretches to it. This flat-profile concrete interlocking tile is the value engineering answer UK roofers reach for instead — a slate-like appearance, a fast interlocking lay, and a fraction of the material cost per square metre, backed by decades of proven service on ordinary UK housing.

Each tile interlocks with its neighbours on both the head and side laps, so a competent roofer can cover a roof significantly faster than with individually-nailed slate, while still finishing with the flat, low-profile look a slate roof is chosen for.

Key benefits

  • Flat, slate-like profile at a fraction of natural slate's material cost
  • Interlocking head and side laps for a fast, efficient lay
  • Proven concrete tile technology with decades of UK service history
  • Three core colourways covering neutral, contemporary and traditional finishes
  • Ordered by coverage area or full pallet, so quantities match your roof exactly

Suitable applications

New-build and re-roofing work on pitched roofs from typical domestic pitches upward (check the minimum pitch and headlap guidance for your specific rafter pitch and exposure before ordering); extensions and outbuildings being tiled to match an existing concrete-tiled roof; large-area re-roofs where natural slate's cost or weight is a barrier.

Installation guidance

Lay on treated timber battens over a breathable roofing membrane at the manufacturer's specified gauge for your chosen headlap, interlocking each tile with its neighbours and nailing or clipping according to the exposure zone for your site. Our breathable roofing membrane is a suitable underlay, and our ventilated dry ridge kit completes the ridge line without the mortar-bedding a traditional ridge needs. For chimney or wall abutment details on the same roof, see our lead-free flashing roll.

FAQs

How many tiles do I need?
Multiply your roof area in m² by the coverage rate (9.9 tiles/m² at standard 75mm headlap) and add an allowance for cuts at verges, hips and valleys — order the bundle size closest to your total, rounding up.

What's the minimum roof pitch?
Concrete interlocking tiles of this type are generally suitable from around 15° pitch upward, but always check the manufacturer's pitch and headlap table for your specific exposure zone before finalising your order.

How does this compare to natural slate?
Both give a flat, low-profile finish, but this concrete tile costs substantially less per m² and is faster to lay thanks to its interlocking edges, while natural slate offers a genuine stone finish and typically a longer service life.

Can I mix colours on one roof?
Technically yes, but for a uniform appearance we'd recommend ordering all tiles for a single roof slope in the same colour and batch where possible, as concrete tile colour can vary slightly between production batches.

Do I need special tools to cut them?
A tile cutter or angle grinder with a suitable masonry blade is normally used for cutting tiles at verges, hips and valleys.

Ordering
