Description

Wet mortar ridge pointing is the first thing to fail on most pitched roofs — it cracks, lets water in behind the ridge tiles, and rarely lasts more than 10–15 years before it needs raking out and redoing. A dry ridge system replaces that mortar joint with a mechanical fixing: a ventilated ridge roll, union clips and brackets that hold each ridge tile firmly in place without a single trowel of cement, while still letting the roof breathe through built-in ventilation.

Kits are supplied by real coverage length — 6m and 10m rolls, plus a heavier-duty 10m kit with mechanical lug fixing for extra wind uplift resistance on exposed sites. Each kit includes everything needed for that length of ridge: the ventilated roll itself, union clips or brackets, and a fixing pack.

Key benefits

  • No wet mortar — mechanical fixing that won't crack, shrink or fall out over time
  • Built-in ventilation strip helps the roof breathe and reduces condensation risk in the roof void
  • 6m and 10m kits cover a typical ridge run in one or two packs
  • Heavy-duty lugged option available for exposed or high-wind sites
  • Faster to install than raking out and repointing a mortar ridge

Installation guidance

Dry ridge systems are designed to be fitted by a competent roofer over the existing ridge line, with the ridge tiles bedded onto the union clips/brackets rather than mortar. Always check the kit is compatible with your specific ridge tile profile and roof pitch before ordering, and choose the heavy-duty lugged option on exposed, coastal or high-altitude sites where wind uplift is a bigger risk. If you're re-roofing the whole pitch, see our natural roofing slate and pair this with a quality breathable roofing membrane underneath.

FAQs

Does this replace mortar completely?
Yes — the kit is designed as a full mechanical alternative to a mortar-bedded ridge, though some installers still use a small amount of adhesive or sealant at specific junctions per the fitting instructions.

Will it fit my ridge tiles?
Union clips and rolls are designed to suit standard concrete and clay ridge tile profiles, but always check compatibility with your specific tile before ordering, especially on older or unusual profiles.

Why choose the heavy-duty lugged kit over the standard kit?
The lugged version adds a mechanical interlock at each tile for extra wind uplift resistance — worth the extra cost on exposed elevations, high ridges, or coastal sites.

How much ridge length do I need?
Measure your ridge run(s) in metres and round up to the nearest 6m or 10m kit, allowing a small overlap at joins — order slightly more than the exact measurement.

Does it need annual maintenance?
Unlike mortar, a dry-fix ridge doesn't need repointing, but it's still worth a visual check after severe storms, as with any roof detail.
