Description
A complete, one-piece EPDM rubber roof for a garden shed, log cabin, summerhouse or workshop. The membrane is cut to your chosen size before it leaves us, so there are no joins to make on the roof, and it is bonded cold with the adhesive supplied — no torch, no flame, no specialist tools. Most shed roofs are finished in an afternoon.

What is not included
We would rather tell you now than have you find out on the roof. This kit waterproofs the deck. It does not include edge trims, trim corners or a full tool set, because not every shed needs them — many are finished simply by dressing the rubber over the edge and sealing it with the mastic supplied.
You may want to add:
- Drip / gutter edge trim if the roof drains into a gutter, and kerb edge trim for the other edges
- Moulded drip trim corners and kerb trim corners — one for every 90° turn
- An EPDM DIY installation kit if you do not already own a seam roller, scissors and brush
- An EPDM pipe flashing boot if a flue or cable passes through the roof

Choosing the right size
The size on this page is the size of the membrane, not your roof. The rubber has to reach past the deck on every side so it can dress down over the edges. As a rule, allow 150mm of membrane on each of the four sides.

If you fall between two sizes, always take the larger one — the surplus is trimmed off in seconds with a knife, but a sheet that is 50mm short cannot be rescued. If your shed has a raised kerb or an upstand against a wall, add the height of that upstand on top of the 150mm.

How it goes on
1. Prepare the deck
Strip the old covering, replace any soft boards, punch every nail head below the surface and re-drive proud screws. Fill gaps wider than 5mm, then sweep the deck clean and let it dry completely. Anything sharp or damp under the rubber will show for the next fifty years.
2. Relax the sheet, then roller the adhesive
Unroll the membrane over the deck with an even overhang all round and leave it 30 minutes to lose its fold memory. Fold half of it back, then roller the water-based deck adhesive onto the bare deck in a full even coat.
3. Lay the membrane into the wet adhesive
Roll the folded half back down into the adhesive while it is still wet — this adhesive is not left to go tacky — and sweep it firmly from the fold outwards with a soft broom to drive the air out to the edges. Repeat for the other half.
4. Dress the edges and seal
Dress the rubber down over every edge, trim the surplus with a sharp knife, and seal the membrane down at the edges and upstands with the mastic supplied. Fit edge trims at this point if you are using them.

Frequently asked questions
Can a complete beginner fit this?
Yes. EPDM is the most forgiving flat roofing material there is: it goes down cold, in one piece, with no flame and no specialist tools. If you can measure a roof, sweep it clean and use a paint roller, you can fit this kit. Our free installation manual walks through every stage, and you can email us mid-job.
Which size do I need?
Measure your roof deck, then add 150mm to each of the four sides and order the kit closest to — but not smaller than — that figure. A 1.8m × 1.2m deck needs a 2.1m × 1.5m kit. If you are between sizes, go up.
Will the membrane have a join or seam?
No. Every kit is supplied as one continuous sheet at the size you order, so there is nothing to tape or overlap and no seam that can fail later.
What exactly is included?
A 1.0mm EPDM membrane cut to your size, water-based deck adhesive for bonding it down, edge sealing mastic for the perimeter and upstands, and an application roller.
Do I need edge trims as well?
Not always. Many shed roofs are finished by dressing the rubber over the edge and sealing it with the mastic supplied. Trims give a crisper finish, protect the edge and are worth adding where the roof drains into a gutter — drip trim on the gutter edge, kerb trim elsewhere, with a moulded corner at every turn.
How long does it take to fit?
A typical shed roof takes an afternoon: around 30 minutes of preparation, 30 minutes letting the sheet relax, an hour to bond it, and an hour on the edges and details. Allow longer for your first roof and do not rush the deck preparation.
Does the deck have to be dry, and what weather do I need?
Yes — the deck must be completely dry, and you need a dry day at 5°C or above with no rain forecast until the adhesive has cured. Water-based adhesive will not bond to a damp deck, and trapped moisture is the main cause of blisters under a new roof.
Can I lay EPDM straight over my old felt?
Sometimes, but stripping is better. Overlaying only works if the old felt is fully stuck down, flat, dry and free of mineral chippings. Stripping back to the deck lets you see the boards, fix the soft ones and start from a sound base — on a shed it is usually an hour of work.
How long will it last, and is it guaranteed?
The membrane carries a 20-year product guarantee and has a field life expectancy of up to 50 years. Felt on the same shed would typically need replacing two to five times over that period.
Does it cope with standing water?
Yes. EPDM is unaffected by ponding water, which is why it suits shed roofs where the fall is often less than ideal. It is still worth building in a fall of 1:80 or better so the roof drains and stays clean.
Do I need a primer?
No. The water-based adhesive supplied bonds directly to sound timber decking — OSB, plywood or planed board. Primer is only needed for specialist details such as bonding to an existing membrane.
Which side of the membrane goes up?
EPDM of this type is the same both sides, so there is no wrong way up. Just make sure the side that touches the deck is clean and free of dust before it goes into the adhesive.
Can I walk on it once it is fitted?
Yes, for maintenance in soft-soled shoes. It is not intended as a walking surface for regular traffic — if you plan to use the roof, add walkway pads over the membrane rather than walking directly on it. Never walk on it wet or frosty; it becomes very slippery.
What if I get a bubble or a wrinkle?
Work it out to the nearest edge with the roller or a soft broom while the adhesive is still wet. A small bubble that sets is cosmetic rather than a leak, but a wrinkle that runs to an edge should be lifted and re-bedded before you seal the perimeter.
What fall does the roof need?
A minimum of 1:80 towards the drainage edge — 25mm of drop for every 2m of run. If your shed roof is dead flat, pack the joists or add firring strips before the rubber goes down.
Can I put decking or a green roof over it?
Yes, with protection. Walkway pads or a protection layer must go between the membrane and anything laid on top, and nothing sharp should sit directly on the rubber. Ask us before you build anything heavy onto a shed roof.
How much maintenance does it need?
Ten minutes a year. Clear leaves and debris off the roof and out of the gutter, and check the edges and any details after big storms. There is nothing to re-coat, treat or paint.
What if I order the wrong size?
Unused, uncut kits can be returned within 30 days in their original packaging. Once the membrane has been cut it cannot be returned, which is why we would rather size it with you first — send us your dimensions.
