DIY or Professional? Fitting an EPDM Rubber Roof
EPDM is genuinely DIY-friendly — it is installed cold, with no torches, no resin cure window and no specialist plant. Plenty of people fit their own shed and garage roofs successfully at the first attempt. But "DIY-friendly" is not the same as "always DIY", and the difference between a roof you can tackle yourself and one you should not usually has nothing to do with the rubber. This page gives you an honest way to decide.
The short answer
If the roof is a simple rectangle, at a height you can work at safely, over a space where a leak would be an inconvenience rather than a disaster, and you have a free weekend and a second pair of hands — fit it yourself. If it involves working at height above a single storey, carries a Building Control sign-off, sits over habitable rooms, or has more than a couple of penetrations and corners, the balance shifts towards a professional.
Roofs most people can fit themselves
Shed and summerhouse roofs
Small, low, simple, and a leak costs you a damp lawnmower rather than a ceiling. Usually a single afternoon. Start with the shed roof guide.
Single garage roofs

Porches, canopies and bay roofs
Small areas, though often with a wall abutment that needs a proper flashing detail. Manageable if you are comfortable chasing and fitting a cover flashing, or if you can get that one detail done by a roofer.
Garden rooms and home offices
Usually straightforward rectangles at low level, but if the building is insulated and used year-round the build-up matters — get the warm-roof specification right even if you fit the membrane yourself.
Roofs where a professional is usually the right call
Anything above ground-floor level
Falls from height are the single biggest killer in UK construction. A first-floor flat roof, a dormer, or a roof reached over a fragile surface is not a DIY job unless you have proper edge protection and access equipment and know how to use them.
Extension roofs over habitable space
Not because the rubber is harder, but because the roof has to satisfy Building Regulations for insulation, condensation control, drainage and fire spread, and because a leak lands in your kitchen. Complex geometry
An L-shape with several internal corners, a roof with parapets on three sides, multiple rooflights or a cluster of penetrations. Each detail is learnable, but a roof with a dozen of them is a poor place to learn. The internal corners guide shows what is involved.

An honest cost comparison
The saving from DIY is the labour, not the materials — you buy the same membrane, adhesive and trims either way. On a single garage, materials are the larger part of a small job, so the percentage saving is real but the absolute saving is moderate. On a big extension roof, labour is a larger share and the saving is bigger — but so is the cost of getting it wrong.
Set against the saving: the cost of hiring or buying access equipment, the value of two days of your weekend, and the cost of remediation if a detail fails. A membrane that has been bonded badly cannot be re-bonded; it has to be replaced. Skills you actually need
None of these are specialist trades, but be honest about which ones you have. You need to be able to work safely at the height in question, including setting up a tower or scaffold correctly. You need basic carpentry, because most re-roofing jobs turn into some amount of deck repair. You need patience with adhesive: reading the flash-off time and waiting for it is most of the skill in the job. You need to be reasonably neat with a knife. And you need a second person for anything larger than a shed — a big EPDM sheet is heavy, floppy and unmanageable alone.
What you do not need: heat, flame, specialist plant, or any trade qualification.
The hybrid approach
Many of our customers split the job. A roofer or carpenter handles the deck, the falls, the insulation build-up and the wall flashing; the homeowner strips the old covering, prepares the site and bonds the membrane. Or the reverse: the homeowner does everything except the one detail they are not confident about. There is no rule that says a roof is either wholly DIY or wholly contracted.
If you are buying materials and having someone else fit them, agree that with the installer first — some contractors will not guarantee labour on materials they have not supplied.
A decision checklist
Answer these before you order:
- Can I reach and work on this roof safely, with proper access equipment?
- Is the roof a simple shape with fewer than three corners needing patches?
- Are there fewer than two penetrations?
- Is there habitable space directly underneath?
- Does this roof need Building Control approval?
- Do I have a full weekend and a second person?
- Do I know the condition of the deck underneath, and have I budgeted for replacing it?
- If a detail fails in two years, can I get back to it easily?
Comfortable answers across the board point to DIY. Two or three uncomfortable ones point to getting help — possibly just for part of the job.
If you are fitting it yourself
Work through the full installation method before you order anything, so you know what the job involves end to end. Size the materials with the roof calculator rather than estimating. Order everything at once, including trims and sealant, because running out of contact adhesive halfway through bonding an upstand is genuinely awkward. Pick your weather: dry, above 5°C, and not windy, since a large sheet in a breeze is dangerous as well as difficult. Will fitting it myself void any guarantee?
Material guarantees relate to the membrane itself. Installation workmanship is separate — a contractor-installed roof may come with a labour guarantee that a self-installed one will not. Keep your receipts and product documentation either way.
