Water runs to the front edge, which takes the gutter drip trim. The membrane dresses up the two parapet walls and is sealed under a wall flashing trim where it meets the house, so there are no exposed edges anywhere on the roof.
Around the lantern, the sheet turns up the timber kerb and is finished with a bead of water cut-off mastic under the lantern frame; the four kerb corners and the four roof corners are sealed with pre-formed corner patches on primer.

What is not included
For the layout above, nothing else is needed. You may want to add:
- A drain outlet if the roof drains through the deck rather than over the front edge
- Kerb edge trim if one side has no parapet and needs a capped edge instead

- Timber for the deck, lantern kerb and firrings — sourced locally, not something we ship
Choosing the right size
The size on this page is the size of the membrane, not your roof.
The rubber has to reach past the deck on every side: over the front edge under the drip trim, up the house wall under the flashing, and up each parapet. Allow 150mm on each of the four sides. If your parapets or wall upstand are taller than 150mm, add the extra height on that side.

If you fall between two sizes, take the larger one. Surplus membrane trims off in seconds; a sheet 50mm short cannot be rescued. The lantern opening is cut on the roof, so its size does not change which kit you need.

How it goes on
1. Prepare the deck and the lantern kerb
Take any old covering back to the boards. Replace anything soft, punch every nail head below the surface, fill gaps over 5mm and confirm the falls run from the house wall to the gutter edge at 1:80 or better.
Fix the lantern kerb to the deck with its corners square and its top level. Chase a 25mm-deep groove into the house wall mortar joint about 150mm above the deck for the wall flashing. Sweep clean and let everything dry.
2. Relax the membrane, then bond the field
Unroll the sheet over the deck and the kerb with an even overhang, and leave it 30 minutes to lose its fold memory. Mark the kerb position on the underside, then cut a cross in the sheet over the lantern opening, stopping 150mm short of each kerb corner.
Fold half back and roller water-based deck adhesive onto the bare deck, stopping about 150mm short of every edge, the parapets and the kerb.
3. Sweep it down into the wet adhesive
Roll the folded half back into the adhesive while it is still wet and sweep it firmly from the fold outwards with a soft broom to drive the air out. Repeat for the second half.
4. Contact-bond the upstands and the kerb
Brush contact adhesive onto the parapet walls, the house wall, the lantern kerb and the matching underside of the membrane. Wait until both faces are touch-dry, then press the rubber up each upstand and roll it hard.
Fold and bond the four kerb corners and the four roof corners, then prime and apply a corner patch over each one.
5. Seal the lantern and fit the trims
Trim the membrane flush with the top of the kerb, run a continuous bead of water cut-off mastic along it and bed the lantern frame down into it.
Fit the gutter drip trim along the front edge at roughly 250mm centres with a 3mm gap at each joint. Tuck the wall flashing trim into the chased groove over the top of the membrane and seal it with the wall flashing mastic.

Frequently asked questions
Can I fit this myself?
Yes, if you are comfortable working at height and methodical about the details. The field of the roof goes down like any EPDM sheet; the parapets, wall flashing and lantern kerb are the parts to take slowly.
Plan it as a full day with a second pair of hands for positioning the sheet, and read the lantern section of the manual before you start.
Which size do I need?
Measure the roof deck, add 150mm to each of the four sides, and order the kit closest to but not smaller than that figure. A 2.7m × 5.7m deck needs the 3m × 6m kit.
If a parapet or the wall upstand is taller than 150mm, add the extra height on that side. Between sizes, go up — or WhatsApp us a photo and your measurements and we will confirm the size before you order.
Does the lantern size change which kit I need?
No. The lantern opening is cut out of the sheet on the roof, so you order the kit for the outside dimensions of the deck. The eight corner patches and water cut-off mastic cover a single lantern of any normal size.
What if I have no lantern, or two?
With no lantern the patches and cut-off mastic simply stay in the box. For two lanterns you need four more corner patches and a second tube of cut-off mastic — tell us when you order and we will add them.
My roof only has a parapet on one side — can I still use this kit?
Yes, with one change. The open side needs a kerb edge trim instead of being dressed up a wall. Tell us when you order and we will swap the trims for the same price.
Will the membrane have a join?
Every kit is supplied as one sheet at the size you order, so there is no on-site joining required — nothing to tape or overlap on the roof.
As with all EPDM sheet, larger sizes may contain a factory-made join formed under controlled conditions; these are covered by the product guarantee.
What exactly is included?
1.2mm EPDM membrane cut to size, water-based deck adhesive, contact adhesive, gutter drip trim for the front edge, wall flashing trim for the house edge, eight external corner patches with primer, wall flashing mastic, water cut-off mastic, a tool kit (scissors, seam roller, paint brush, roller set, mini roller) and all clips and pins.
What colour is the membrane, and can I choose the trim colour?
The membrane is lead / slate grey. The gutter trim comes in black, white or anthracite grey — choose above; the price is the same either way.
How long does an orangery roof take to fit?
Allow a full day. Deck preparation and the wall chase take the morning, the sheet goes down in about two hours, and the parapets, lantern kerb and trims take the rest of the afternoon.
Does the deck have to be dry, and what weather do I need?
Yes. The deck must be completely dry and you want a dry day at 5°C or above with no rain forecast until the adhesive has cured. Water-based adhesive will not bond to a damp deck, and trapped moisture blisters the finished roof.
Can I lay EPDM over the old felt or fibreglass?
Over sound, flat, dry felt with no chippings, sometimes. Over fibreglass, no — the surface needs stripping or overboarding first. On an orangery we would almost always take it back to the deck so the parapet and wall details can be formed properly.
How long will it last, and is it guaranteed?
The membrane carries a 20-year product guarantee and has a life expectancy of up to 50 years. Felt on the same roof would typically need replacing three to five times over that period.
Is the membrane certified?
Yes — it is BBA certified and fire-tested to BS 476 and EN 13501. If your building control officer or insurer wants the paperwork, email us and we will send the certificates.
Does it cope with standing water?
Yes. EPDM is unaffected by ponding, which matters on parapet roofs where water is boxed in on three sides. Build in a fall of 1:80 to the gutter edge anyway so the roof drains and stays clean.
Do I need a primer?
Only where supplied: the primer in the kit is for the corner patches. The water-based adhesive bonds directly to OSB and plywood without it.
Can I walk on the finished roof?
For occasional maintenance in soft-soled shoes, yes. It is not a walking surface for regular traffic, and never walk on it wet or frosty.
How much maintenance does it need?
Ten minutes a year: clear leaves out of the parapet corners and the gutter, and check the wall flashing mastic and lantern seal after big storms. There is nothing to re-coat or paint.

What if I order the wrong size?
Tell us straight away. Every membrane is cut to your size to order, so once it has been cut it cannot be returned or exchanged unless it is faulty.
If you contact us before the membrane is cut we can amend the size free of charge — which is why we would rather size it with you first. Send us your deck dimensions and a photo before you order.
