Description

Single-ply PVC is the membrane contractors reach for when a flat roof needs a genuinely welded, monolithic waterproofing layer rather than taped or adhesive-jointed sheets. Every seam is hot-air welded into a single homogenous skin, so there's no seam tape to fail years down the line — the roof is effectively one continuous sheet of plastic from edge to edge. It's a different installation discipline to EPDM rubber (welding equipment and training rather than a roller and adhesive), which is exactly why it holds a separate, established place in UK flat roofing rather than competing head-on with our EPDM range.

  • Flexible PVC membrane, 1.5mm gauge, in five real fixing/construction systems: loose-laid ballasted, mechanically fixed, elastomeric-modified mechanically fixed, fully adhesive-bonded, and fleece-backed
  • Hot-air welded seams form a continuous, monolithic waterproofing layer
  • Anthracite Grey or Dark Grey depending on system (see specification table)
  • Supplied in trade rolls — 1.05m or 2.1m widths
  • Suitable for new-build and refurbishment flat roofs, typically over insulation on a warm roof build-up

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from your EPDM rubber membrane? Both are genuine single-ply waterproofing systems, but they join differently. EPDM sheets are jointed with adhesive tape or liquid-applied seam adhesive; PVC sheets are hot-air welded into one continuous skin. PVC also tends to be specified where a lighter colour or a fully bonded/mechanically fixed system is wanted, while EPDM is generally the more DIY-accessible option.

Can I install this myself? Realistically, no — not to the standard the material is capable of. Hot-air welding PVC seams correctly needs proper welding equipment and hands-on training; a poorly welded seam is a leak waiting to happen. This is a trade/contractor-installed product, unlike our EPDM range which is designed for competent DIY installation.

Which fixing system should I choose? Mechanically fixed (MF/EMF) is the most common choice for refurbishment over an existing deck and copes well with movement. Fully bonded (EBM) gives the flattest, most wind-resistant finish and suits new-build. Loose-laid ballasted (D) is used where the roof structure can carry the extra weight of a stone or paving ballast layer and mechanical fixing isn't practical. Fleece-backed (Type A) adds an extra protective layer under the membrane, useful over slightly uneven decks.

Do I need a vapour control layer underneath? Yes, on a warm roof build-up — fit a VCL below your insulation, then this membrane goes above the insulation as the top waterproofing layer.

What size roll do I need? Measure your roof area and add roughly 10% for laps, upstands and waste. A 2.1m wide roll covers ground faster with fewer seams than the 1.05m width, which matters on larger roofs where fewer welded joints means less on-site labour.

Building a full warm roof build-up? Start with our polythene vapour control layer, add our PIR insulation board, then finish with this membrane as the top waterproofing layer. This is a genuinely different single-ply system to our GRP fibreglass kits and EPDM range — it suits projects where a contractor-installed, hot-air-welded finish is specified.
