Description

A loose-laid breather membrane relies on overlaps and battens to hold it in place — fine on a standard pitch, but on a low-pitch roof or an exposed, wind-loaded site, wind can get underneath it before the tiles or battens are on. This underlay solves that differently: it's fully self-adhesive, bonding directly to the deck so there's nothing for wind to lift and no reliance on lap joints alone for weathertightness.

Because it bonds solid rather than floating, it also works as genuine secondary weatherproofing during the build — if the roof covering is delayed by weather, a fully-bonded underlay is doing far more than a loose-laid one to keep the structure dry underneath.

Ordering guidance

This is a premium, fully-bonded product positioned above our standard Breathable Roofing Membrane (a loose-laid, mechanically-fixed underlay for standard-pitch roofs at a lower cost per m²) — choose this range specifically where low pitch, high wind exposure, or airtightness performance is the deciding factor, and the standard breather membrane for everything else. Check deck compatibility (typically timber sheathing) with the manufacturer's guidance before application.

FAQ

How is this different from your standard breathable membrane? The standard membrane is loose-laid and mechanically fixed under battens; this product bonds solid to the deck via a self-adhesive backing — a different fixing technology aimed at low-pitch and high-wind-exposure situations.

What roof pitch is it suitable for? Self-adhesive underlays are typically specified for lower roof pitches than standard loose-laid membrane can reliably weatherproof — check the manufacturer's minimum pitch guidance for your exact roof design.

Can it be left exposed before the roof covering goes on? Being fully bonded gives genuinely useful temporary weather protection during a build, but it is not a substitute for timely covering — follow the manufacturer's maximum UV/weather exposure period.

What surface does it bond to? Typically timber roof sheathing/decking — confirm deck type and condition (clean, dry, sound) before application.

Is it vapour permeable? Yes — it's designed to shed liquid water while still allowing the roof structure to breathe, unlike a solid vapour-closed barrier.
