Why EPDM Outperforms Every Other Flat Roofing Material
There is a reason why professional roofing contractors across the UK have moved away from felt and bitumen systems. EPDM rubber is not a new material — it has been specified on commercial flat roofs for over 60 years — but it is now the benchmark for residential and garden building roofing too. Here is why:
Zero Seams, Zero Weak Points
Supplied as a single piece cut to your roof. Traditional felt uses overlapping sheets — every overlap is a potential leak. EPDM eliminates this entirely.
50-Year Proven Lifespan
Quality felt degrades in 10–15 years, especially under UV and standing water. EPDM retains its waterproofing properties for decades with zero maintenance.
Remains Flexible in UK Winters
EPDM stays pliable to -45°C. Felt and some GRP systems become brittle in cold weather, causing cracks. EPDM simply moves with the structure.
No Cracking, Blistering or Peeling
Fully UV, ozone and infrared stable. The membrane will not crack, blister, or peel regardless of how many seasons it sees.
Environmentally Responsible
EPDM is non-toxic, contains no heavy metals, and is fully recyclable at end of life. The water-based deck adhesive in this kit is solvent-free and low odour.
DIY-Friendly Installation
No hot works, no naked flame, no specialist equipment. If you can paint a floor, you can install this roof. Most garden room kits are completed in a single day.
Ideal Applications
This kit is configured for free-standing garden structures where the gutter runs along the longest edge. Suitable for:
Installation Overview
No specialist roofing experience required. Follow these four steps for a professional result:
Prepare the Deck
Ensure your OSB3 or plywood deck is clean, dry, smooth and structurally sound. Fix any protruding fixings and remove all debris. A poor deck is the most common cause of installation problems — take your time here.
Apply Adhesive
Roll the water-based deck adhesive across the entire substrate. Apply contact adhesive to the perimeter 300mm zone on both the deck and the underside of the membrane. Allow to tack off before bonding.
Lay the Membrane
Position the single-piece membrane across the roof with equal overhang on all sides. Work from one end, pressing and rolling down firmly using the included roller to eliminate air pockets. Bond the perimeter edges firmly using the seam roller.
Fix the Trims
Fit the Sure Edge gutter drip trim along the low front edge, then the kerb edge trims on the remaining three sides. Click in the pre-formed external corner pieces, then clip and pin all trims using the included fixings. Trim any excess membrane flush. Your roof is complete.
Not Sure Which Size You Need?
Select the kit size that matches or exceeds your roof dimensions. Your deck must be approximately 150mm smaller per side than the kit size to allow the membrane to overlap the edges and bond correctly. If your roof is an unusual size or you have a complex layout, contact our team before ordering — we're happy to advise.

Storage Note: If you are not installing immediately, unroll and re-roll the membrane lengthways to prevent crease formation. Store adhesives and trims indoors — temperature fluctuations affect performance before installation.
