Why choose cast iron over aluminium or uPVC? Mostly a conservation requirement — listed buildings and properties in conservation areas often need like-for-like cast iron replacement as a condition of consent. Beyond that, many people specify it on period properties simply because the profile, weight and finish match the age of the building in a way lighter modern materials don't.
Does primed finish need painting on site? Yes — primed castings are supplied ready for a proper topcoat once fixed, matched to your specification. Black finish arrives ready to fix with no further painting needed, though it can still be overpainted later.
How is cast iron guttering fixed? Half round profiles hang from fascia brackets at standard 915mm centres; ogee profiles typically fix directly to the fascia board. Downpipes are secured with pipe nails or brackets at each socket and mid-length. Always follow the fitting manufacturer's fixing centres for wind loading in your area.
What's the difference between plain and eared downpipe? Eared downpipe has cast lugs at the socket for a screw-fixed wall strap — the traditional heritage fixing method. Plain downpipe is fixed with separate pipe brackets. Match whichever your existing system or specification calls for.
Is cast iron heavier to install than aluminium? Considerably — allow for proper support and expect two-person handling on longer runs and downpipe lengths. This is a genuine strength of the material for longevity, but plan installation accordingly.
