Description

Working near an unprotected roof edge is one of the most common causes of serious falls on flat roof jobs — re-roofing, skylight fitting, gutter work, solar installs. A freestanding guardrail system protects that edge without a single fixing through the membrane: galvanised steel uprights sit on their own counterweighted bases, connected by lightweight tube rails, so the roof covering underneath stays completely intact.

Every post, weight, tube and toe board below is sold as its own real component, priced individually, so you build a kit that matches your actual roof edge rather than paying for a fixed length you don't need. A typical straight run uses one End Support Upright at each end, Main or Intermediate Support Uprights every 2–2.5m along the edge, connecting Galvanised Tube between them, and a Perforated Toeboard where there's a risk of tools or debris being kicked off the edge.

Key benefits

  • Freestanding, counterweighted bases — no drilling or penetration of the roof membrane
  • Modular: buy exactly the uprights, tube lengths and accessories your roof edge needs
  • Galvanised steel construction throughout for outdoor durability
  • Half-height spring-loaded gate available for a safe crossing point
  • Swept bends and folding brackets for corners and roof-edge direction changes

Planning your kit

Measure the roof edge to be protected and work out how many uprights and tube lengths you need. Space Main or Intermediate Support Uprights at roughly 2–2.5m centres, with an End Support Upright (supplied with its own counterweights) closing each end of the run. Add a Half Height Spring Loaded Gate wherever operatives need a controlled crossing point, and a Swept Bend where the run turns a corner. This system pairs naturally with our Flat Roof Access Hatch and roof access ladder systems for a complete safe-access setup, and with any of our flat roof membrane or GRP kits for the main re-roof.

Safety responsibility: this equipment is designed to help protect operatives working near a roof edge, but correct configuration, spacing, counterweighting and use depends on the specific roof, wind exposure and task. It is the buyer's/installer's responsibility to plan the system in line with current UK work-at-height regulations and to have the installation checked by a competent person before use — we do not provide a site-specific safety assessment.

FAQs

Do I need to fix this to the roof?
No — the system is designed to be freestanding, held in place by counterweights on the End and Main Support Uprights and separate 20kg counterweight units. No roof penetration is required.

How many counterweights do I need per upright?
This depends on wind exposure, roof height and the specific configuration — always follow the manufacturer's loading guidance for your site rather than a fixed rule of thumb.

Can I use this on a pitched roof?
This freestanding system is designed for flat and low-pitch roof edges. It is not intended as a fall-arrest system for steep pitched roofwork.

What's the difference between a Main Support Upright and an Intermediate Support Upright?
The Main Support Upright includes a counterweight and is typically used at key load points and gate positions; the Intermediate Support Upright is a lighter-duty post used along a straight run between main posts.

Do I need a toeboard?
A toeboard is recommended wherever there's a risk of tools, materials or debris being kicked or blown off the roof edge onto people or property below.
