Description

Every flat roof that carries services eventually forces the same bad choice on whoever maintains it: step over the pipe run and hope, or tread on it. Neither is acceptable once a roof is visited regularly, and lagged pipework crushes under bootfall long before anyone admits the route has become a hazard. A free-standing step-over platform removes the decision entirely by lifting the walking route clear of the obstruction.

This one is moulded from glass-reinforced polyester rather than steel or aluminium, which matters more on a roof than it does at ground level. GRP does not corrode, does not need painting, and carries no galvanic risk where it sits against aluminium flashings, zinc details or a single-ply membrane. It is also light enough for one person to reposition when the roof layout changes.

Where it earns its place

  • Crossing insulated pipe runs, condensate lines and cable trays on flat roofs
  • Maintenance routes to air handling units, chillers and plant platforms
  • Bridging low upstands, kerbs and threshold changes between roof levels
  • Solar array service routes where cabling and mounting rails cross the walkway
  • Ground-level plant rooms, pump houses and service yards

Choosing a size

Measure the widest point of the obstruction, including lagging, and add clearance at both sides before choosing a footprint. Clearance is measured from the roof surface to the underside of the deck, so a 150mm lagged pipe sitting on a 25mm bearer needs the 200mm option, not the 150mm. Span is the direction you cross in and width is the platform you stand on, so a single narrow pipe usually wants a short span and a generous width rather than a large square. Where a route crosses several services, two platforms placed end to end usually work better than one oversized unit.

Frequently asked

Does it need fixing down to the roof?
No. It is free-standing and sits on the roof surface, which is what makes it suitable for single-ply and rubber membranes where penetrations are best avoided. On exposed roofs, position it against an upstand or plant base where wind uplift is a concern.

Will it damage an EPDM or single-ply membrane?
The legs bear on the membrane, so on a soft or newly laid roof we recommend setting it on protection pads or a matting run. Our EPDM rubber walkway pads spread the load well under the leg positions.

Can it be used outside in all weather?
Yes. GRP is unaffected by rain, frost and UV, and unlike steel it will not rust where the coating is chipped during handling.

Is it slippery when wet or icy?
The deck is a gritted open mesh, so surface water drains straight through rather than sitting on the tread. It behaves well wet. Like any surface, it needs care in genuine ice.

How do I connect it into a longer route?
Run it as part of a defined walkway. Our PVC roof walkway matting forms the approach either side, and where the route runs near a roof edge, pair it with the freestanding roof edge protection guardrail kit.

What if the services are on the roof rather than crossing it?
Pipework and plant sitting on a flat roof should be carried clear of the covering rather than resting on it. Our non-penetrating rooftop support frames do that without any fixing through the membrane.
