Description
Natural zinc is the material conservation officers ask for by name. It self-heals its own patina after every scratch, it never needs painting, and it's routinely specified with a genuine 100+ year service life on listed buildings and quality self-builds across mainland Europe and, increasingly, the UK. This traditional half round and box guttering system brings that same soldered, lap-jointed zinc rainwater tradition to conservation projects, period renovations and heritage-grade self-builds — supplied in 3m lengths ready for your roofing contractor or zinc-work specialist to install.
Why natural zinc guttering
- Genuine heritage material — the material conservation area planning conditions and listed building consent typically specify, not a coated look-alike.
- Self-healing patina — minor scratches and scuffs weather back to a uniform matt-grey patina on their own; there is no paint finish to chip or fade.
- Very long service life — zinc rainwater goods are widely cited across the industry as capable of 100+ years' service when correctly installed and maintained; this is general industry experience with the material rather than a certified or guaranteed figure for this specific product.
- Fully recyclable — zinc is one of the most recycled construction metals in Europe, with a high scrap value at end of life.
- Traditional soldered/lap-jointed system — jointed and dressed by hand on site in the same way zinc roofing and flashing details are formed, giving a genuinely seamless heritage appearance rather than a snap-fit plastic joint.
Applications
Suited to listed buildings and conservation area properties where planning conditions require genuine metal rainwater goods; period cottages, farmhouses and Victorian terraces undergoing a sympathetic re-roof; oak-frame and other heritage-style self-builds; and architect-specified new build where a natural, unpainted metal finish is wanted on the roofline. The 120mm box profile suits flat-roofed extensions, garden rooms and contemporary heritage-style projects wanting concealed, high-capacity drainage with the same natural zinc finish.

Installation & usage guidance
Zinc guttering of this type is a specialist, traditionally-jointed system rather than a click-together plastic product, and installation should be carried out by a roofer or zincworker experienced with soldered or lap-jointed metal rainwater goods. Zinc reacts with certain construction materials and run-off, so avoid direct contact with fresh copper, fresh oak or chestnut tannins, uncured cementitious render, and acidic timber treatments — isolate with a suitable barrier where contact is unavoidable. Allow for thermal movement along long runs and follow your installer's guidance on expansion joints.
Compatibility
Half round profiles pair with standard round zinc downpipes and outlets in matching diameters; the 120mm box profile pairs with box-profile outlets and downpipes. This is a distinct heritage metal system, not dimensionally interchangeable with our uPVC or powder-coated aluminium ranges — check outlet and fascia bracket compatibility with your zincworker before ordering.
Ordering information
All sizes are supplied as 3m gutter lengths, priced and sold per length. Order enough lengths to cover your total run plus a reasonable allowance for joints, corners and cutting waste, and confirm bracket and fitting requirements with your installer before purchase.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between natural zinc and quartz zinc? Both are the same base metal; natural zinc has a brighter mill finish that weathers to a matt grey patina, while quartz zinc is pre-weathered at the factory to a consistent matt grey-blue finish from day one. Our half round sizes are natural zinc; the 120mm box gutter is quartz zinc.
Can I install this myself? Traditional zinc guttering is soldered or lap-jointed on site rather than clipped together, so it's normally fitted by a roofer or zincworker rather than as a DIY job — factor installation into your project budget.
Will planners accept this for a listed building? Genuine zinc is widely accepted for listed building and conservation area rainwater goods, but always confirm the exact specification with your conservation officer before ordering, as requirements vary by authority and by property.
How long will it last? Zinc rainwater systems are widely reported across the industry to give 100+ years of service when correctly installed and maintained. This is general industry experience with the material rather than an independently tested or certified figure for this specific product.
What if I need a modern coated alternative instead? If your project doesn't require genuine metal for planning reasons, our powder-coated aluminium half round gutter system gives a similar profile with a maintenance-free coloured finish at a lower cost, and our cast iron guttering & downpipe system is the traditional choice where a conservation officer specifically requires cast iron rather than zinc. Zinc sits between the two: lighter and easier to handle than cast iron, with a genuine unpainted metal finish that aluminium can't replicate.
