Description

Standard step-over platforms top out around 200mm of clearance, which covers a bare service pipe and very little else. Add lagging, add a bearer, add a second pipe stacked alongside the first, and 200mm stops being enough. This is the taller version of the same crossover, built on deep pultruded I-beam legs instead of short channel, giving 210mm to 300mm underneath.

The extra height is the whole point, so the leg section changes with it. An I-beam carries the deck load across a longer unsupported drop without flexing the way a taller channel leg would, which is why the taller platforms are a different build rather than the same unit on longer legs.

Where it earns its place

  • Crossing insulated heating and chilled-water pipe runs where lagging adds 50mm or more to the pipe diameter
  • Stepping over stacked or twinned service runs sharing one route across the roof
  • Bridging deeper cable baskets and combined pipe-and-tray runs
  • Crossing low bund walls, kerbs and upstands too tall for a standard platform
  • Plant rooms and service yards with raised pipe supports beneath the run

Choosing a size

Clearance is measured from the roof surface to the underside of the deck, so measure the tallest point of the obstruction as installed, including lagging and any bearer or support it sits on, then take the next clearance up. Span is the direction you walk across; width is the platform you stand on. A single pipe usually wants a short span and a generous width rather than a large square deck.

Intermediate clearances at 220, 230, 250, 260, 280 and 290mm are made in the same range and are available to order. Ask before ordering if one of those suits the obstruction better than the four listed here, as they are priced the same for a given deck size.

Frequently asked

How is this different from the standard step-over?
Clearance and leg construction. Our standard GRP step-over platform covers 100mm to 200mm on channel legs and comes in seventeen sizes. This one starts where that stops, on I-beam legs. If the obstruction is under 200mm, the standard version is the cheaper choice.

Why does the price not change with clearance?
Because the maker prices by deck size, not by leg length. A 996 x 996mm platform costs the same at 210mm as at 300mm, so choose the clearance that actually fits rather than the shortest one.

Does it need fixing down to the roof?
No. It is free-standing and sits on the roof surface, which is what suits single-ply and rubber membranes where penetrations are best avoided. On an exposed roof, position it against an upstand or plant base where wind uplift is a concern, and remember a taller platform catches more wind than a low one.

Will the legs mark the membrane?
They bear on the covering, and a taller platform concentrates the same weight through the same four feet. On a new or soft roof, set it on protection pads. Our EPDM rubber walkway pads spread the load under the leg positions.

What about a guarded version?
Where the crossing is near an edge or used often, a handrailed crossover is the safer specification. Our GRP step-over platform with handrails covers that at 200mm clearance.

Ordering

Select deck size and clearance above. Platforms are supplied assembled and ready to position. Pair the crossing with PVC roof walkway matting for the approach, and with non-penetrating rooftop support frames where the services themselves need carrying clear of the covering.
